South West State President, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, on Saturday chaired an expanded session of the South West Security Council, focusing on tightening security measures, intensifying counterterrorism efforts, and strengthening coordination among all security agencies operating in the region.
The meeting took place at the South West Presidential Palace in Baidoa and brought together senior officials including the Minister of Security, the Minister of Interior, the Director General of the Presidency, top commanders of the Somali Armed Forces, regional security officers, and representatives from AUSSOM.
During the discussion, officials reviewed the current security landscape across the South West regions of Baay, Bakool, and Lower Shabelle. The council examined progress made in recent operations against Al-Shabaab, challenges still facing frontline units, and strategies to improve intelligence-sharing and rapid-response capabilities.
President Laftagareen underscored the need for heightened vigilance, urging commanders to maintain proactive security measures and bolster collaboration with local communities. He stressed that community cooperation is essential for exposing threats early, preventing militant movements, and guaranteeing long-term stability.
He also commended the Somali Armed Forces, regional Darawiish, and security partners for their continued commitment to safeguarding the region, noting that planned and ongoing operations have disrupted militant networks and restored confidence among residents.
The meeting further touched on development-linked security initiatives, including road protection, securing humanitarian corridors, and improving the presence of government institutions in newly stabilized areas. Officials emphasized that security and development must go hand in hand to ensure sustainable peace.
President Laftagareen concluded by reaffirming the administration’s commitment to supporting security forces, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and ensuring that South West State remains on a steady path toward peace and stability.
